  As a result of a phone call from my dad's neighbor, I flew in from out of state intending to take my dad to a few of his dr appmts so that I could talk with his doctors myself. He had lost 15% of his body weight in 4 months and they have been running tests that were all negative. My first impression was that parking can get pretty bad but they have a volunteer golf cart shuttle that is great if you're in the back 40. As it turned out, I spent a week here at LCVA placing my dad initially in the hospital under advisement that he had dehydration, a urinary tract infection and onset of dementia. I never was this close to anyone who had dementia. It is very unsettling to watch a parent fade away. Nonetheless, the nursing staff was terrific, efficient and helpful. The social workers are caring and professional..but seem to be overworked as some of them don't always return calls or emails, to the point of where a supervisor had to be contacted. She was apologetic and understanding explaining that her staff was overworked. I was allowed to visit whenever I wanted and bring dad clothes, personal needs and food. The nurses were always responsive to my every question. 5 stars for the nursing staff, 4 for the social workers, 3 for the doctor and dietitican who couldn't figure out why dad lost 20 lbs in 4 months. They didn't take a good common sense look to figure out the reason was the combination of being blind, having onset of dementia and living alone all contributed to the simple fact that he was slowly starving himself. That was my only dissapointment.
